IMHO means “in my humble opinion” – it is an abbreviation used in emails. This is a series where I unashamedly express my opinions in a forthright manner. If you are easily offended it may be best not to read these posts.
Transactional Analysis (abbreviated to TA) was invented in the 1950′s and 1960′s by Eric Berne and his collaborators. It went through a fad in the 1960′s (especially around the book Games People Play, which was a pretty ordinary book) and has not really recovered from this. This is a shame because there are some parts that are extremely valuable.
One part of TA that is extremely valuable is ‘scripting’. This is the notion that in our childhood we make up a ‘script’ for our lives that we then largely follow.
This has the enormous advantage of giving counseling a long term perspective. Most counseling deals (at least initially) with short term crises. The question is how then to move to something longer-term and lasting. Scripting offers a neat theoretical way to do this.
So what is a script? The simplest way to say this is that it answers three questions:
- Who am I?
- Who are these others? and,
- What do I have to do to thrive/survive?
There are various ways to organise the answers to these questions but this is the guts of what the script is.
This also has the benefit of giving the client a sense of where they are and what it is that needs changing so that they don’t get stuck in the same old way of doing things.
To experience the power of scripting for yourself try answering those three questions. Then see if they have influenced your life so far. (It’s likely they have). Then you can think about what you would like to change and how. I think you will find that scripting could be incredibly important for your own happiness as well as the happiness of those around you.
