I have a guest post on the Philosophy, Psychology and Real Life blog. It is called Empathy and Communication: do we have to have ‘been there’?
It challenges the popular idea that we ‘had to be there’ in order to understand. I think this has truth in it – communication is based on experience. But I do think that empathy is possible; we didn’t have to be there. Which means that at some level and in some ways our experience is shared. I think this has big implications for how we communicated – one being that we need to put in the time to listen. I hope you like the post. Evan
