Albert the Urban Monk has a great post on Welcoming and Releasing Emotions.
It is a very good summary of Western (especially the Sedona Method) and Buddhist approaches to dealing with our painful emotions.
If you want an excellent summary of how to deal with emotions that you find powerful and overwhelming this is enough to (at least) get you started and feeling some sense of control.
The post is clearly laid out and well written. It gives step by step instructions so you will know what to do and how. Doing these kinds of practices can change your life for the better, it has mine and the lives of those I know. Very highly recommended.
