This idea comes from a visualisation that I did recently.  I was following instructions to visualise particular archetypal figures.  At the end of the visualisation these four “figures” emerged in quick succession: nurturer, guide, healer, joy.  It then struck me that this was a possible description of a counselling process.

Nurture is more than problem solving – or even therapy.  It means a commitment to the full flowering of the person – of their own gift and their individuality.  This may require a little time.

Guiding is having some frames or procedures to help a person realise their potential.  The guide has specifics to offer that are of use to the person being guided.  The guide offers reliable (not infallible) content.

Healing is where the person finds that their wounds get in the way of their development.  Past trauma is impeding their development.  This is the therapy.  Here the person is offered the support they need to finish with their past and to have it available as a resource to them in the present.

Joy is the fruit of the process.  By joy I don’t mean manic, but an elated calmness: an abiding buoyancy that stays with us throughout (at least most, if not absolutely all) our ups and downs.

I think this is simple and specific enough to be useful.  I also think it also broad enough to include many modalities and techniques.  It also doesn’t sees the person as more than their problem – always a temptation for any therapy or healing.  It has a bigger story into which the therapy fits.

Do you find this understandable and useful?  Let me know what you think.
