It seems very likely that we will in the future need to live with less energy.
This has implications for health.
Do we really need to devise a lifestyle that is less energy intensive? Is there really a shortage of energy? I am convinced that the answer to both these question is “no”.
With existing technology from renewable sources we have abundant energy. The problem in my view is the vested interests of current energy producers and the politicians who serve their interests. Every politician I know of is currently betraying the future of their country (and our planet) by dancing to the tune of these vested interests.
This is the reason we need to think about a less energy intensive lifestyle.
What could it mean for health?
- Hospitals will either need to generate their own power, if they wish to continue operating in the same way, or find other ways of operating (sorry about the pun). This could lead to an emphasis on shorter stays in hospital (leading to pain and inconvenience for people).
- It could lead to a greater usage of such things as community nursing. Currently, in Australia at least, these services are greatly underfunded. So for those who need on-going care, the best they can expect is usually a visit every two days.
- It could mean shifting the burden to friends and family – while the demand for these people to stay in the work-force also increases. This is already happening in Australia. There is a ‘carers pension’ but you wouldn’t want to try and pay a mortgage on it.
- It could lead to an emphasis on prevention and the re-design of cities and neighbourhoods. Perhaps the most effective (and cost-effective), but a long-term strategy and so difficult to implement.
- It could lead to a preference for ‘alternative’ health that is less energy intense – acupuncture needles require little energy to make and use. Counseling requires even less.
What do you think a future with less energy might mean for your health?
